Cohost, developed by the Anti-Software Software Club, was a website for people who wanted to be thoughtful about how they used social media. It was a cozy place to exist and post as much or as little as you felt like. There were no ads, no data sharing, and no algorithms. The user was given complete control over their experience on the site, and the freedom to do so without being exploited by the platform. It had a relatively small userbase, but there was a sense of comradery and kinship not found on other websites. Yes, there was still drama every week. No, Cohost was not perfect. However, as Cohost was run by a small co-op of queer leftists who actually tried to moderate the space, the user experience still had a level of tranquility that is impossible to match on other centralized platforms.
